New Report by BioTrends Research Group Will Explore the Perceptions and Expected Use of Alternative Dialysis Modalities in the US

Exton, PA – February 12, 2010 –BioTrends is pleased to announce the fielding of a new syndicated report, Special Report: Trends in Dialysis Modalities.  This report will cover use of alternative modalities including peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis, as well as attitudes and perceptions toward these modalities, barriers to growth, and expected future use of these modalities.  Understanding dialysis initiation trends for incident patients (e.g. pre-emptive kidney transplant rates, patient involvement in modality choice) will also be explored in this study.

Presently, in-center, thrice weekly hemodialysis is the modality used in the vast majority of dialysis patients while peritoneal dialysis, both CAPD and CCPD, has been on a downward trend for the past decade.  More recently, Nephrologists have started to incorporate home hemodialysis as a modality option for patients.   Currently there are three FDA approved home hemodialysis machines offered by B Braun (“Dialog Plus”), Fresenius (“K At Home”) and NxStage (“System One’).  With the impending dialysis bundled payment system on the horizon, there is added interest in exploring alternative modalities, considering their potential for growth in the new environment.

This syndicated report will include responses from Medical Directors (n=75) and Dialysis Nurses (n=25) with PD and/or home hemodialysis patients under management.  Additionally, in-depth qualitative interviews will be conducted with several thought leaders in PD and home hemodialysis.  The report will be published in early April 2010.
